Italian velvet

Most elegant and noble in touch among all velvets, produced with unbelievable care and precious details, loved all over the world by designers, stylists, and artists. Made of pure silk, it consists of overlapping layers: a soft substrate on which threads, several millimetres long, are very densely arranged, called fleece. When discovered, the high quality of the fabric was quickly appreciated by tailors. From the time when the fabric was used, Italian velvet was reserved for high social classes (merchants, landowners, wealthy burghers), and used to prepare formal and representative robes. For centuries, it was one of the main fabrics used to produce the clergy robes. The highest quality silk velvet was often used as material for liturgical vestments.
